The result of an artist’s residency at the Savannah College of Art and Design’s Atlanta Campus, this body of work employs the visual language of books as both the personal journals that record experience and the prescriptive or sacred tomes that shape it. Each book explores a different facet of the relationship between the self as perceiver and the overlooked things hidden in the background of everyday experience. Throughout the series, the qualities of quietude, attention, ephemerality, permanence, and time are each considered in turn. The notion of wonder as a revelatory force remains central to the work, as the books both emerge from and provide a liturgy of attending to and cherishing the nearly silent and forgotten world of non-human things. Primarily created from life around midtown Atlanta, the books use precious materials alongside images of debris, weeds, and windswept leaves in an attempt to re-hallow the mundane and uncover the glory to which modernity has been blinded.
